The two things that shorten a laptop's life most are heat and how you treat the lithium-ion battery, and both are almost entirely within your control. Manage those, keep the machine clean, and stop a few gigabytes of junk software from clogging it, and a mid-range laptop will comfortably run well for six to eight years instead of feeling slow and swollen after three.
Heat is what quietly ages the CPU, GPU, battery, and SSD. When the internal temperature climbs past roughly 90-100°C, the processor throttles — it deliberately drops its clock speed to protect itself — which is why a hot laptop feels sluggish exactly when you need speed most. Sustained high temperatures also accelerate battery wear and dry out the thermal paste between the chip and heatsink.
Laptops pull cool air in and push hot air out through vents, usually on the underside and rear. Using the machine on a bed, couch cushion, or duvet blocks those vents and traps heat against the chassis. Keep it on a hard, flat surface, or use a lap desk or a cooling stand that lifts the rear a couple of centimeters — even a pair of bottle caps under the back edge measurably improves airflow. If the fan is constantly loud, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc on Windows) or Activity Monitor on macOS and sort by CPU to find the process pinning it, often a runaway browser tab or a stuck update.
Over a year or two, dust mats over the fan blades and heatsink fins and airflow drops. Shut the laptop down, take it outside, and give the vents short bursts of compressed air, holding the can upright so it doesn't spit propellant. The detail most people miss: hold the fan blades still with a toothpick or cotton bud while you spray, because letting the fan spin freely can generate a small reverse voltage that stresses its circuitry. For a laptop three or more years old that runs hot, having a technician reapply thermal paste can drop temperatures by 10-20°C.
Grime is cosmetic; the wrong cleaner is permanent. Screens especially have delicate coatings — anti-reflective layers, and on OLED and many matte panels a coating that ammonia and strong solvents will haze or strip.
Power off, then wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. For stubborn smudges, lightly dampen the cloth with distilled water, or a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar, and never spray liquid directly onto the panel where it can wick behind the bezel. Skip Windex and any glass cleaner containing ammonia, and keep isopropyl alcohol off the screen entirely — save it for other surfaces.
For the keyboard, tip the laptop and tap the base, then blow crumbs from between the keys with compressed air. For the case, trackpad, and greasy keycaps, a microfiber cloth barely dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol cuts through skin oil and dries without residue. Charging ports and USB-C sockets collect pocket lint that stops a cable seating fully — switch off and clear it gently with a wooden or plastic toothpick, never metal, which can short a pin.
Modern laptops use lithium-ion cells, and their wear follows predictable chemistry. They're rated for a set number of full charge cycles — often 500 to 1,000 — before capacity falls to about 80% of new. Two things burn through that lifespan faster than normal: heat, and time spent sitting at the extremes of charge.
The gentlest state for a Li-ion battery is a middling charge, roughly 20-80%. Sitting pinned at 100% all day while warm is the hardest thing you can do to it. Most brands now build in a limiter:

Don't guess. On Windows, open a terminal and run powercfg /batteryreport — it writes an HTML file showing the design capacity versus the current full-charge capacity, plus the cycle count. On a Mac, System Settings > Battery > Battery Health shows "Normal" or "Service Recommended," and System Information > Power lists the exact cycle count. A battery that has lost 15-20% after a few hundred cycles is behaving completely normally, not failing.
For long storage, leave it around 50% charged, powered off, somewhere cool and dry — not fully empty, which can deep-discharge and kill a cell, and not fully full.
Hardware care keeps a laptop working; software hygiene keeps it feeling new. Most "my laptop got slow" complaints are junk software, not aging silicon.
Always lift and carry the laptop by its base, never by the open screen, which twists the hinge and stresses the panel. Before closing the lid, check nothing is on the keyboard — even a pen will crack a display when the lid shuts on it. Slide it into a padded sleeve before it goes into any bag, keep drinks well clear (a spill is one of the most common ways laptops die), and never stack heavy books on a closed lid.
It's fine on any modern laptop, which stops charging the battery once it's full and runs off wall power. The one caveat is that sitting at 100% while warm ages the cell slightly faster, so if your machine offers a charge cap like 80%, enable it when you're mostly at a desk.
Once or twice a year for most people, and more often if you have pets or work in a dusty room. If the fan is louder than it used to be or the laptop feels hotter than normal, treat that as your cue regardless of the calendar.
Occasionally is harmless, but making a habit of draining to empty shortens the battery's life. Li-ion cells prefer to stay between roughly 20% and 80%, and there's no need to fully cycle them to "calibrate" a modern laptop.
Nine times out of ten it's software, not worn-out hardware — too many startup apps, a nearly full SSD, or an out-of-date OS. Clear space, trim startup programs, and update everything; if it still has a spinning hard drive, upgrading to an SSD is the single biggest speed improvement available.
