For roughly 95% of cleaning, a dry microfiber cloth is all you need; for greasy fingerprints, dampen a corner with distilled water. Only reach for a disinfectant when you actually want to kill germs, and even then you apply it to the cloth, never to the device. The thing most people get wrong is treating a screen like a kitchen window, and that mistake strips a coating you cannot buy back.

Understand the coating you're protecting#

Every modern phone screen, and most tablets and premium laptops, ships with an oleophobic coating (from the Latin for "oil-fearing"). It is a microscopically thin fluorinated layer that makes fingerprints bead up and wipe off easily. It is also the first thing that wears away, and once it is gone your screen smudges faster, looks cloudy, and feels grippier under your thumb.

Ammonia-based glass cleaners (the blue stuff), acetone, and strongly abrasive powders dissolve or grind this layer off. That is the real reason the "no Windex on screens" rule exists. It is not superstition, it is chemistry. Matte laptop panels and many TVs add a separate anti-glare / anti-reflective coating on top, which is even more fragile, so the same caution applies with extra force.

Why "power off first" is more than a slogan#

Powering down and unplugging does two things. On a black screen, smudges and dust show up clearly against the reflection, so you actually see what you are cleaning. And a cold, powered-off panel will not register a wet patch as a phantom touch or, on an OLED, briefly stress pixels under pressure. Give the device a minute to cool if it has been running hard.

The tools that actually work#

You need surprisingly little, but the specifics matter:

  • A microfiber cloth in the 200 to 350 GSM range. GSM (grams per square meter) is the weight spec printed on good lens and screen cloths; that band is dense enough to lift oil without scratching. The freebie cloth in a sunglasses case is perfect. Wash it in plain water with no fabric softener, since softener leaves a film that smears.
  • Distilled water, not tap. Tap water carries dissolved minerals that dry into white spots as it evaporates. A small bottle costs about a dollar and lasts months.
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes, only for disinfecting hard, nonporous surfaces, and only occasionally.
  • A can of compressed air and a soft dry brush (a clean makeup brush or a retired toothbrush) for dust and crumbs.

Skip paper towels, tissues, napkins, and the corner of your shirt. They feel soft but contain wood fibers that are abrasive at the micron scale and leave fine swirl scratches you only notice months later, when the light hits wrong.

Cleaning a phone screen, step by step#

  1. Power off and set the phone on a flat, well-lit surface.
  2. Dry-wipe first, in one direction, with the microfiber cloth. Most fingerprints disappear here.
  3. For grease that resists, mist one corner of the cloth with distilled water so it is barely damp, wring any excess, and wipe. The cloth should never be wet enough to leave a visible trail.
  4. Finish with a dry section of the cloth to clear streaks.
  5. If you genuinely want to disinfect, wipe gently with a 70% isopropyl wipe, then dry. Do this sparingly rather than daily.

The alcohol question, answered properly#

Old advice says "never use alcohol on a screen." Manufacturers have since nuanced that. Apple's own support guidance explicitly permits wiping hard, nonporous surfaces, including the display, gently with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a Clorox-type disinfecting wipe. So which is right? Both, with context.

The truth is that occasional 70% isopropyl is fine and will not visibly harm the coating, but repeated daily alcohol use accelerates oleophobic wear. So use water for routine cleaning and save alcohol for when disinfection is the actual goal, such as after you have been sick or handed the phone around.

Why 70%, not 91% or 99%#

Counterintuitively, the higher-strength bottle is worse for surface disinfecting. 70% isopropyl contains enough water to slow evaporation, giving it the contact time it needs to actually kill microbes, and it is gentler on coatings. The 91% and 99% grades flash off in seconds and are harsher; the 99% "electronics grade" exists specifically for cleaning bare circuit-board contacts, where you want zero water residue, not for wiping your screen. Whatever the strength, never use bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or anything with added fragrance or "wax" on a device.

The openings that actually kill devices#

Liquid inside the case, not a scratched screen, is what usually turns a device into a paperweight. Ports, speaker grilles, microphone holes, and the seams around buttons are open doors to the electronics, and this is the whole reason for the never-spray rule: a damp cloth keeps moisture under your control, while a spray scatters droplets into exactly those gaps, where they corrode contacts over days or weeks.

For the charging port, resist metal. A USB-C or Lightning port packed with pocket lint is the single most common cause of "my cable won't charge anymore," and the fix is a wooden or plastic toothpick, gently, with the phone off. Never a paperclip or a pin, which can bridge the pins and short them. For speaker grilles, brush with the dry toothbrush; do not push anything damp in.

A note on water resistance: an IP67 or IP68 rating means the phone survived fresh-water immersion in a lab when new. It is not a license to rinse the phone under a running tap, and the seals degrade with age, heat, and drops. Soap and pressurized water in particular void that protection.

Laptops, keyboards, and fans#

Clean the laptop screen exactly like a phone: dry microfiber, then barely-damp distilled water, never a spray. For the keyboard, tilt the laptop and use short bursts of compressed air, holding the can upright and about 15 to 20 cm away so it does not spit freezing liquid propellant onto the board.

Here is a mistake even careful people make: blasting the internal cooling fans directly with compressed air spins them far past their rated RPM and can wear or seize the bearings. Hold a fan blade still with a toothpick, or use short indirect bursts, when you clear dust from vents. Wipe keycaps and the palm rest with a barely-damp cloth, keeping moisture away from the gaps between keys.

TVs and large monitors#

The method is identical and the stakes are higher, because panels are big, expensive, and often coated with delicate anti-glare film. Dry microfiber for dust, a barely-damp distilled-water cloth for fingerprints, and absolutely no household glass cleaner. Samsung, LG, and Sony all warn in their manuals against ammonia and alcohol on the screen for this reason. Press lightly, since an LCD or OLED panel behind the glass can show pressure marks or, on OLED, temporary discoloration if you lean in hard.

  • Using paper towels or a shirt because a proper cloth was not handy.
