How to Protect Your Devices From Overheating

Heat shortens the life of phones and laptops and can be a safety risk. Here are simple, practical habits to keep your devices cool and running safely.

Heat kills batteries and throttles chips, and the fix is almost entirely about where you put a device, not what you buy to cool it. Keep a phone or laptop below roughly 35°C (95°F) ambient, never fast-charge it in direct sun or under a pillow, and stop using it the moment it becomes uncomfortably hot to hold.

How heat actually damages your gadgets#

Two separate things happen when a device gets too warm, and they matter for different reasons.

First is thermal throttling. Modern chips, the Apple A-series and Qualcomm Snapdragon in phones, or Intel and AMD CPUs in laptops, monitor their own junction temperature and deliberately cut clock speed once they cross a threshold, usually when the outer skin of the device reaches the mid-40s Celsius. That is why a sun-baked iPhone stops recording 4K video, dims its OLED display, or feels sluggish. The device is protecting itself, not failing.

Second, and permanent, is battery aging. Every lithium-ion and lithium-polymer cell degrades faster the hotter it runs. The widely cited figures from Battery University tell the story: a cell held at a full charge loses roughly 20% of its capacity per year at 25°C, but closer to 35% per year at 40°C, and the rate climbs sharply above that. The worst combination is heat plus a high state of charge at the same time, which is exactly what a phone experiences fast-charging in a hot car. Unlike throttling, this damage does not reverse when the device cools. It is slow, invisible wear you only notice months later as shorter battery life.

Know the safe temperature range#

Apple specifies an operating ambient range of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) for iPhones and its laptops, with non-operating storage tolerated from about -20°C up to 45°C. Samsung and most Android makers publish nearly identical numbers. The practical ceiling to remember is 35°C ambient, and note that the device's internal temperature runs well above the air around it once you put it under load.

A parked car obliterates that margin. On a 30°C (86°F) day, a closed car interior can climb past 50°C within an hour, and a dark dashboard baking in the sun can exceed 70°C (160°F). That sequence, throttle, then a "Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it" screen, then a refusal to charge, is your device begging you not to leave it there.

Where devices overheat, and the fix#

Direct sun and enclosed spaces#

The easiest win is also the most ignored: keep devices out of sun and hot boxes. A windowsill, a dashboard, a glove box, a bag left in a hot trunk. When you are outdoors, keep a phone in a pocket or shaded bag rather than face-up on a table where the black glass absorbs heat.

Soft surfaces and blocked vents#

Laptops pull cool air through intake vents, usually slots on the underside, and push hot air out the back or sides. A bed, a couch cushion, or a blanket seals those intakes and lets the machine stew in its own exhaust. Use a hard, flat surface or a lap desk. For a gaming laptop under sustained load, a basic cooling pad with fans (typically $20 to $40) measurably lowers temperatures and quiets the fans.

Dust#

Over 12 to 18 months, dust clogs the fan blades and the fins of the heatsink until airflow chokes. If your laptop's fans roar at idle or the chassis is hot near the exhaust, blow the vents out with a can of compressed air in short bursts, holding the fan still with a toothpick so it does not over-spin. On a three- or four-year-old machine, replacing the dried-out thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink can drop temperatures by 10°C to 15°C.

Charging generates the most heat#

Fast charging and wireless#

Fast charging over USB-C Power Delivery (USB-C PD), whether 20W, 45W, or higher, pushes a lot of current and produces real heat, most of it in the middle of the charge. Wireless Qi charging runs hotter still per watt delivered, because it is less efficient and the energy lost to that inefficiency becomes heat trapped between the pad and the phone. If a phone is already warm, a wired cable will charge it cooler than a wireless pad.

Do not stack heat sources#

The single hottest scenario is a demanding task plus charging at the same time: mobile gaming, turn-by-turn GPS with the screen at full brightness, or long 4K video recording while plugged in. Let the phone finish charging first, then game. Overnight, charge on a hard nightstand, not under a pillow or a stack of other devices.

Turn on charge management#

Both platforms include settings that limit the heat-plus-full-charge aging combo. On iPhone: Settings > Battery > Charging, where you will find Optimized Battery Charging, and on iPhone 15 and later a Charge Limit you can cap at 80%. On Samsung: Settings > Battery > Battery Protection. These hold the charge lower during long overnight stretches, cutting the time the cell spends hot and full.

When a device is already too hot#

Treat genuine heat as a stop signal, and work through these steps:

  1. Stop the load. Quit the game or camera and close background apps.
  2. Unplug it from power immediately.
  3. Take off any thick or MagSafe case so heat can escape.
  4. Set it somewhere cool, shaded, and open, not back in a pocket or on a charger.
  5. Wait. Ten to twenty minutes at room temperature is enough.

Do not put it in a fridge or freezer. The rapid temperature drop causes condensation to form inside the sealed chassis, and moisture corrodes contacts and triggers liquid-damage sensors. Slow cooling at room temperature is safer and completely sufficient. If a battery looks swollen (a bulging back panel, or a screen lifting off the frame), the device smells acrid, or it gets alarmingly hot with nothing demanding running, stop using it and get it serviced. A swollen cell is a failing battery and a real fire risk, not something to ride out.

Common mistakes people get wrong#

  • Charging under a pillow overnight, which traps heat for hours precisely when the battery is sitting at a high charge.
  • Panicking at a warm phone during fast charging. Some warmth is normal physics; only worry when it is too hot to hold comfortably.
  • Leaving a thick, insulating case on during heavy use or charging.
  • Trying to "shock cool" a device in the freezer.
  • Ignoring a loud laptop fan for years until dust finally chokes the airflow.

Do not overlook software, either. A runaway app can cook a phone with nothing plugged in. On iPhone, Settings > Battery shows per-app usage; on Android, Settings > Battery > Battery usage. A misbehaving app, a stuck background sync, or a stalled OS update is a common and easily fixed culprit.

Should I close background apps to reduce heat?#

If a specific app is driving the heat, yes, quitting it helps immediately. Check Settings > Battery to spot an app using far more power than expected. Reflexively force-closing every app is not necessary, though, since a well-behaved app sitting idle in the background generates almost no heat.
