Adding a second monitor takes about ten minutes and comes down to three decisions: which port to use, which cable that port needs, and whether the port can actually push your monitor's resolution and refresh rate. Get those right and the operating system does the rest automatically. This guide walks through each choice with the exact specs so you buy once and plug in once.
Look at the back of your PC or the sides of your laptop and identify each video output by shape and logo. There are four you'll realistically meet:
The rule for a clean setup: pick an output on the computer, check what inputs the monitor lists in its spec sheet, and match them. A monitor almost always has HDMI plus DisplayPort, sometimes USB-C. If both ends offer DisplayPort, use it — it handles high refresh rates more reliably than HDMI on desktop GPUs.
Thin laptops often expose only one or two USB-C ports. You have two ways forward. A USB-C hub or docking station with DisplayPort Alt Mode passes the laptop's native GPU signal through and drives one or two external displays over a single cable that also carries power and USB accessories. If your laptop's USB-C port lacks Alt Mode entirely, you need a DisplayLink dock instead — it compresses video over plain USB using a driver you install from displaylink.com. DisplayLink works on almost anything but adds a little latency, so it's fine for spreadsheets and browsers and less ideal for fast gaming or video editing.
A cable that physically fits can still be the wrong cable. This is where most people quietly lose resolution or refresh rate without realizing it.
The failure looks like this: you connect a 4K 144Hz monitor with an old HDMI cable from a drawer, Windows shows a picture, and you assume it's fine — but you're actually running 4K at 30Hz or 1080p because that cable is HDMI 1.4 (10.2 Gbps). For 4K at 120Hz or higher over HDMI, buy a cable rated Ultra High Speed HDMI (the certification for 48 Gbps). For DisplayPort, look for DP80 or VESA-certified DisplayPort 2.1 if you're chasing the top refresh rates; otherwise a certified DisplayPort 1.4 cable covers the vast majority of monitors.
USB-C-to-USB-C works for a monitor with a USB-C input, but confirm the cable is rated for video and enough power — a charge-only cable won't do. When in doubt, a certified USB-C to DisplayPort cable is the most predictable choice for a high-refresh display.
Plug the cable into both ends, connect the monitor to power, and switch it on. You don't need to shut down the computer first — modern GPUs hot-plug displays fine — but powering the monitor before the PC boots sometimes helps a stubborn one register.
Within a few seconds the desktop should extend or the screen should flash as the driver adjusts. If the second screen stays black:

Now tell the OS how the screens cooperate.
On Windows 11: open Settings > System > Display. You'll see numbered boxes for each screen. In the dropdown near the bottom choose "Extend these displays." Faster still, press Win + P and pick Extend from the flyout — the same menu offers Duplicate, "Second screen only," and "PC screen only."
On macOS (Ventura and later): go to System Settings > Displays, click Arrange, and make sure the "Mirror Displays" box is unchecked so the Mac extends rather than duplicates.
Extend treats both panels as one continuous desktop, which is the entire point of a second monitor. Duplicate shows the same image on both and only makes sense when mirroring to a projector or TV for a presentation.
Then set your main display — the one holding the taskbar and where new windows open. On Windows, click the box for the monitor directly in front of you and tick "Make this my main display." On macOS, drag the white menu-bar strip onto your preferred screen in the Arrange view.

Set each monitor to its native resolution (the panel's physical pixel count — e.g., 2560x1440) so text stays crisp; anything lower gets interpolated and fuzzy. Then set the refresh rate to the panel's maximum. On Windows: Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, then choose the highest value in "Choose a refresh rate" (120Hz or 144Hz on gaming panels). Displays frequently default to 60Hz even when they can do more, so check this manually.
A 27-inch 4K monitor at 100% scaling makes text microscopic. Windows sets a scaling percentage per monitor under Display (commonly 125% or 150% for high-density panels). macOS uses "Looks like" resolutions in the Displays panel to the same effect. Set each screen independently — this is what keeps a laptop's sharp panel and an older 1080p external monitor both readable.
Back in the arrangement view, drag each monitor's box to match its physical position. If the second monitor sits to the left, drag its box to the left; align the tops so the cursor doesn't snag at the seam. Done right, the mouse glides across the gap instead of getting stuck on the wrong edge.
Yes. There's no requirement that both monitors use the same connector. Your GPU drives each output independently, so an HDMI monitor and a DisplayPort monitor coexist without conflict — just match each cable to the ports on both ends.
Almost always it's running below its native resolution or at the wrong scaling. Set it to its native resolution in Display settings, then adjust the scaling percentage (Windows) or "Looks like" size (macOS) until text is comfortable. Blurriness that persists at native resolution usually means a VGA connection or a failing cable.
Most integrated graphics from the last several years (Intel and AMD) and virtually all discrete GPUs drive at least two external displays, but the exact number and maximum resolution depend on the specific chip. Check your GPU or laptop spec page for "maximum displays supported" before buying a third or fourth monitor.
Yes, if both monitors and your GPU support DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST). You run DisplayPort out of the PC into the first monitor, then a second DisplayPort cable from that monitor's output to the next. Thunderbolt monitors can chain similarly. HDMI does not support daisy-chaining, so it needs a separate output or a dock.
